Kimmswick
Approximately 25 miles south of downtown St. Louis, the tiny river town of Kimmswick acts as a living museum.
Founded in 1859 by German immigrants, Kimmswick boasts more than 20 unique shops stocked with sought-after antiques, homemade crafts and other Americana. Many of the shops occupy historic structures that have been restored and revitalized through community efforts.
The charming town also has a history museum, along with the ancestral home of Fred and Mabel Ruth Anheuser, affectionately known as Fredmar Farms. If the weather cooperates, we recommend taking a riverboat cruise during your visit, as well.
When the time is right, enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of Kimmswick’s eateries, which dish out hearty Midwestern cuisine and tempting baked goods, and if you’re so inclined, spend the night at one of the quaint bed-and-breakfasts.
If you’re visiting for the Apple Butter Festival, though, be sure to book your accommodation early. As the largest annual event in Kimmswick, the scrumptious celebration draws more than 100,000 visitors to the area. During the festival, more than 500 food, drink and craft vendors line the streets, and live entertainment adds to the exuberant atmosphere.
Note: The vast majority of Kimmswick businesses are closed on Mondays.
